Recycling has become almost synonymous with sustainability. The assumption is simple: if something is recycled instead of sent to landfill, the environment wins. It’s a mindset that has driven everything from consumer demand for recyclable packaging to corporate sustainability commitments.
But reality is a bit more complicated.
Just because a material is technically recyclable doesn’t mean it makes environmental or economic sense to recycle it in every situation.
The real question isn’t simply: Can this material be recycled? It’s: Does recycling this material, in this location, make sense?

Without manufacturers creating demand for recycled feedstock, the supply chain remains incomplete.
The point is that recycling is only sustainable when the entire system is.
Before a bottle becomes another bottle, or cardboard becomes new packaging, every material has to be collected, separated, consolidated, transported, processed and ultimately manufactured into something new. Every stage consumes resources. And in many cases, transport is one of the biggest, particularly in South Africa.
Distance changes the equation
We generate waste across the country, but much of our recycling infrastructure is concentrated around a handful of metropolitan and industrial hubs. That means recyclable material often has a long journey before it can begin a second life.

The recycling benefit doesn’t disappear. The further materials travel, however, the more that benefit is eroded.
Weight and value matter too
And then distance is only one part of the equation. The weight and value of a material can be just as important.
Glass is a good example. It can be recycled almost indefinitely without losing quality, making it one of the world’s most recyclable materials. Yet it’s also heavy and relatively low in value per tonne. That means transport can quickly become the dominant cost, particularly when processing facilities are far from where the glass is collected.
The same principle applies across many waste streams. Not all recyclable materials are equally valuable, and not all are worth transporting over long distances.
In other words, a material may be technically recyclable but practically unviable because it costs more to move than it is worth to recover.
Location matters.
Proximity is a competitive advantage
South Africa’s geography forces us to think differently about waste. In developed countries with dense recycling infrastructure, transporting material to a processing facility may be relatively straightforward. Here, long transport corridors, dispersed populations and uneven processing capacity mean logistics often become the deciding factor.
This is why there’s growing interest in local solutions. Regional material recovery facilities, decentralised composting, on-site food waste treatment and local beneficiation all aim to process materials closer to where they're generated.
The closer waste can be treated or recovered to where it’s generated, the lower the transport burden – and the greater the likelihood that recycling remains both environmentally and economically viable.
From recycling targets to systems thinking
For years, waste management success was measured by one number: How much waste was diverted from landfill? That’s still important. But on its own, it doesn’t tell the whole story. A truly sustainable waste strategy asks a broader question: What delivers the lowest overall environmental impact?
